Artificial Grass Prices: Supply vs Installed Costs

Compare current Australian artificial grass supply-only and installed price examples, then use a practical checklist to compare turf, base preparation, drainage, edging, waste and GST.

AI editorial concept comparing a roll of artificial grass and base materials with a fully installed Australian backyard lawn

How much is artificial grass in Australia?

A useful artificial grass price starts by saying what is being bought. A supply-only square-metre rate buys the turf roll. A finished installation may also need removal of the old surface, excavation, disposal, a compacted base, drainage work, edging, joins, fixings, infill, delivery and labour. Comparing the two headline rates as though they describe the same scope will usually understate the real project.

The current examples below are prices published by individual Australian suppliers and installers and checked on 9 October 2026. They are not a RealScape estimate or a national average. Product promotions, freight, site conditions and installation methods can change, so use them to understand the scope questions before asking businesses to assess your property.

Supply-only price is based on the roll you order

A rectangular 24 m² lawn does not always mean buying exactly 24 m² of artificial grass. Products come in fixed roll widths, commonly 2 m or 4 m in the sources checked. Curves, angled boundaries, pile direction and the position of joins can increase the ordered area and leave offcuts. Ask for the cut plan as well as the lawn measurement.

For example, Melbourne Synthetic Grass lists its Oasis 35 mm promotional product at A$14.30 per m² including GST, in a 4 m-wide roll sold in multiples of 5 linear metres. That published unit price is useful evidence, but it still excludes the base, delivery and installation. Ausgrass separately lists products from A$22 to A$34 per m² including GST in 2 m and 4 m widths, showing that product choice and layout both affect the supply bill.

Installed price depends on what is under the grass

The visible turf is only the top layer. Tauro Turf's Perth guidance describes possible machine or manual excavation, removal, a screeded and compacted cracker-dust substrate, pegs, joining tape and edging. It gives a rough supply-and-install guide of A$70–A$90 per m² and warns that smaller jobs may cost more per square metre; its page does not state a GST basis for that guide.

Melbourne Synthetic Grass advertises professional supply and installation from A$75 per m², but a starting price is not a standard specification for every yard. Before comparing it with another quote, confirm the removal depth, base type and compacted depth, drainage treatment, turf model, seam plan, edging, disposal, access and GST in writing.

Why two installed quotes can be far apart

One quote may assume clear side access and a firm, well-drained site. Another may include hand excavation through a narrow house, disposal of wet soil, extra base material, a new drain, curved metal edging and several joins. The second total can be higher even when the visible turf product costs less.

Small courtyards can also carry a higher effective square-metre rate because travel, set-up, cutting and compaction still have to happen. Conversely, a large simple rectangle may use rolls efficiently. Ask each business to state both the measured lawn area and the chargeable turf quantity so the effect of seams and waste is visible.

DIY artificial grass needs a complete materials plan

DIY can remove professional labour from the quote, but it does not remove site preparation. Budget separately for disposal, base material, compactor hire, screeding tools, edging, joining tape or adhesive, pegs, delivery and any infill required by the selected product and use. Check whether the existing soil and drainage are suitable before buying the roll.

Do not assume every turf needs the same infill or fixing method. Tauro says its landscape range is non-infill grass, while also explaining optional kiln-dried silica and its recommended application for people who choose it. Follow the selected manufacturer's installation and warranty requirements rather than copying a generic shopping list.

Compare like-for-like turf and installation scopes

Give every installer the same current photos, approximate dimensions, intended use, access notes and known drainage concerns. Ask them to identify the exact turf, roll layout and preparation method. A one-line 'artificial grass installed' allowance is difficult to compare and leaves the most expensive parts open to interpretation.

Use the checklist below to turn each offer into the same set of questions. If a detail is unknown until excavation, ask how it will be measured, priced and approved as a variation. The final construction price should come from the professional after a site assessment, not from multiplying an online headline rate by the visible lawn area.

Plan the look before requesting artificial grass quotes

Artificial grass is one part of a garden layout. Test how the lawn area relates to paving, planting, play space, pets, shade, paths and entertaining before fixing the boundary. RealScape lets a personal homeowner use six lifetime AI generations to explore a direction from a real yard photo; the result is a visual concept, not a measured plan, drainage design or construction estimate.

When the direction is clear, include the same preferred concept and editable project brief in a free homeowner quote request. Landscapers can then inspect the real site, confirm levels and access, recommend a suitable product and price a defined scope. That makes the comparison more useful than asking several businesses for an unexplained per-square-metre rate.

For Australian homeowners, start with a real backyard photo and use an AI concept to explore a practical dream-garden direction. The visual can make style, layout, planting, and material preferences easier to explain before requesting quotes.

Turn the preferred concept into a clearer project brief, find suitable landscapers, and compare scope, inclusions, exclusions, and options against the same visual direction. Homeowner quote requests are free.

The concept is an early planning aid rather than a measured plan or promise of the finished result. Confirm drainage, levels, access, services, permits, engineering, materials, and construction details with the appropriate professionals.
